Executive Summary
Rounding is a critical healthcare practice that helps ensure patients receive consistent care, staff remain accountable, and potential issues are identified early.
As Senior Product Designer, I led the end-to-end design of Nurse Rounding and Leader Rounding for Concentric Care Concierge on the Siemens HiMed bedside platform, alongside a Rounding Timeline experience for Concentric Care Lighthouse.
The solution enabled nurses and leaders to complete structured rounds, capture patient feedback, escalate unresolved concerns, and provide operational visibility across hospital wards.

The Problem
Hospitals rely on regular rounding to monitor patient wellbeing, improve communication, and reduce avoidable incidents.
However, rounding processes were often fragmented, inconsistently documented, and difficult to track across wards.
The challenge was to create a digital experience that simplified bedside rounding while providing leaders with greater visibility into patient care and operational performance.
Research & Discovery
I collaborated with stakeholders to understand existing rounding workflows, operational requirements, and patient experience goals.

Research revealed three key needs:
Streamline bedside documentation.
Capture meaningful patient feedback.
Improve visibility across hospital wards.
Rather than digitising paper forms, the opportunity was to create a connected rounding ecosystem that supports bedside care, leadership engagement, and operational oversight.
Product Vision
Create a unified rounding experience that improves patient outcomes while giving healthcare teams greater visibility and accountability.

Product Strategy
Three guiding principles informed every design decision throughout the project.
Simplify Care Delivery
Enable staff to complete rounds quickly and consistently.
Improve Visibility
Provide leaders with a clear view of rounding activity across wards.
Strengthen Communication
Create structured opportunities for patient and staff feedback.
Ecosystem Overview
The solution spans multiple touchpoints across the healthcare ecosystem.
Nurses complete bedside rounds, leaders gather patient feedback, unresolved concerns are escalated, and all activity becomes visible through the Lighthouse timeline experience.
Multiple concepts were explored to balance workflow efficiency, cognitive load, and data capture requirements.
Designing For Efficiency
Through stakeholder feedback and iterative refinement, the final solution consolidated questions, simplified navigation, introduced progress tracking, and reduced interaction overhead for busy clinical environments.
Nurse Rounding Experience
Nurse Rounding digitises the traditional bedside workflow into a structured and repeatable experience.
Staff are guided through key patient care checks covering pain, positioning, treatment needs, safety, and reassurance before completing the round.
The workflow reduces documentation friction while promoting consistent patient care.

Hospital staff must tap their RFID cards on the HiMed device to automatically log in to the 'Staff Portal'. This provides patient information, warnings, and access to 'Nurse Rounding'.

Select the patient's current status and press 'Next'. Selecting any other status besides 'Available' also completes 'Nurse Rounding'.

If patient is 'Available', all tasks are to be completed and acknowledged before pressing 'Submit'.

This completes 'Nurse Rounding'. Once completed, the staff can choose to go back to the 'Staff Portal' or the HiMed patient mode.
Leader Rounding Experience
Leader Rounding focuses on patient experience and service recovery.
Leaders conduct structured conversations that capture feedback, identify unresolved concerns, recognise staff performance, and escalate issues requiring further attention.
Progress indicators helped simplify longer survey workflows and improve completion rates.

Hospital staff must tap their RFID cards on the HiMed device to automatically log in to the 'Staff Portal'. This provides patient information, warnings, and access to 'Leader Rounding'.

These are a series of 'Yes' or 'No' questions. The questions appear one by one as they get answered. There is a progress bar on the bottom left.

Once a set of questions is answered, the 'Next' button appears. Pressing 'Next' brings up the next series of questions.

Some questions require text inputs.

Typing in the text field with the on screen keyboard.

This is a multiple choice question.

Text input fields aren't mandatory questions.

This completes 'Leader Rounding'. Once completed, the staff can choose to go back to the 'Staff Portal' or the HiMed patient mode.
Lighthouse Timeline
To support operational oversight, I designed a timeline view within Concentric Care Lighthouse.
The timeline provides ward-level visibility into rounding activity, helping healthcare teams identify missed rounds, monitor compliance, and track patient care across time.
This transformed the rounding data into actionable operational insight.

This is the rounding timeline as seen on the Concentric Care Lighthouse web app clinical dashboard. The blue vertical bar is the current time.
Challenges & Decisions
Clinical Complexity
Challenge: Capturing detailed healthcare requirements without overwhelming users.
Decision: Break workflows into structured steps.
Workflow Efficiency
Challenge: Busy staff have limited time for documentation.
Decision: Use simple yes/no interactions and guided progression.

Visibility Across Teams
Challenge: Rounding data was difficult to monitor at scale.
Decision: Introduce the Lighthouse timeline experience.
User Impact
→ Faster rounding workflows.
→ More consistent patient care.
→ Improved patient feedback capture.
→ Better issue escalation pathways.
Business Impact
→ Expanded Concierge platform capabilities.
→ Improved operational visibility.
→ Increased value for healthcare organisations.
→ Stronger patient engagement offering.
Reflection
This project reinforced the importance of designing beyond individual screens.
By connecting bedside workflows, leadership engagement, and operational visibility into a single ecosystem, the solution created value for patients, clinicians, and healthcare organisations alike.
